Victoria Cross of 2nd Lt Collin.

2nd Lieutenant Joseph Henry Collin VC

Memorial Plaque Appeal

We are very pleased to report that the museum was successful in it's bid for the memorial plaque at auction on 11th August.  As a result of the appeal and support from the MLA/V&A Museum Purchase Grant Fund the museum was able to make a good bid - with the result the plaque was purchased - the hammer price of £2100, with premium and VAT will mean a total cost of £2500.  The plaque will go on display very shortly.

Joseph Henry Collin was born in Jarrow, County Durham and grew up in Carlisle.  In 1915 he enlisted for service in The Great War, and by 1917 had been commissioned into the 1st/4th Battalion of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment.

For his actions during extremely heavy fighting near Givenchy, in France, on 9th April 1918 he was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross "For most conspicuous bravery, devotion to duty and self-sacrifice in action."  The full citation can be found here.

Collin is buried in Vielle-Chepelle New Military Cemetery, France.  His Victoria Cross was presented to his mother and in 1956 members of his family presented it to the museum where it is on display with four other Victoria Crosses.

A bronze Memorial Plaque, which was issued to the next of kin of 1,355,000 men and 600 women who were killed or died during the First World War, was sent to his mother and it is to be sold by auction in Carlisle on 11th August 2006.  The museum is keen to acquire Collin's plaque to display alongside his VC.  The auction estimate is up to Ł2500.

Please help us raise the money to purchase it!
