Colonel John Plumbe-Tempest of the 1st Royal Lancashire Militia
circa 1830. Oil painting.
John Plume-Tempest followed his father, Captain Thomas Plumbe, whose
uniform from 1760-65 can be seen in the museum, into the Royal Lancashire
Militia. He served from 1794 until 1852, commanding the RLM for a total
of 33 years from 1819 to 1852.

Colonel Henry William Breton, 4th Regiment of Foot, the King’s Own,
circa 1830, painted by P A Barnard.
Breton was commissioned as an Ensign in 1815 and served with the King’s
Own in the West Indies (1821-6), Portugal (1826-7), and sailed to
Australia on the ‘William Glen Anderson’ on 14th May 1931 serving in Van
Diemen’s Land, Parramatta and Goulburn Plains. Breton was promoted
Colonel and commanded the regiment from 1834 at Parramatta and Sydney and
then in India at Madras, Bangalore, Bellary, Secunderabad and Kamptee. He
later rose to the rank of General and became Colonel of the 56th Regiment
in 1854. He died at the age of 91 in 1889.

Private Henry Watts, of the Light Company 4th Foot, painted in
spring 1831 before his departure for Australia. The inscription reads:
“Henry Watts, 4th King’s Own, Lions of
England, Dear Parents when you see this remember
me And bear me in your mind When i am far in a Foreign Clime.”
On the reverse of the picture is
written: “Painted by Charles Dean later 15th Regiment....for H
Watts....Chatham,
Kent.”

A portrait of Private Henry Watson, 4th King's Own.
Likely to have been painted in the 1830s and possibly by the same artist,
Charles Dean, of the portrait above of Watts.
Accession Number KO2714/01 Purchased with
support of the Museum's Acquisition Fund, Lancaster Military Heritage
Group, the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and the War Memorial Village,
Lancaster.
