1st/4th (TF) Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment - Page Three

There are sadly very few photographs of the 1st/4th Battalion on Active Service in France and Flanders.

Sergeant Dawson - likely to be Sergeant Frank Dawson, number 12888, served with both the 7th and 1st/4th King’s Own. Awarded Military Medal. From Stockport.
Sergeant Johnston (No. 2 Platoon) - No clear match but may be Sergeant George Johnson, number 200691, of C Company in January 1918. Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal and Bar - London Gazettes 28th March 1918 and 3rd October 1918.
Quartermaster Sergeant Yates - likely to be QMS Fred Stanley Yates, number 12050, of the 6th and 1st/4th Battalions King’s Own. Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal, London Gazette 6th February 1918.
Sergeant Dickinson - likely to be H Dickinson, number 202739, Military Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal, London Gazette 15 November 1918. Recorded as being with Number 11 Platoon, C Company, 1st/4th King’s Own in January 1918.
Sergeant Robinson - likely to be Sergeant Thomas Robinson, number 201123 of the 1st/4th King’s Own. Awarded the Military Medal for action on 9 Apr 1918 - London Gazette 7 October 1918. Came from Coniston.

Sergeant Miles MM - Likely to be, Sergeant Albert Ernest Miles, number 202159, who served with 1st/4th King’s Own and is recorded as being with No 1 Platoon, A Company in January 1918. Mid to late 1918 he was still with A Company. Military Medal awarded in London Gazette 23rd February 1918. Came from Liverpool.
Sergeant Cross - likely to be Sergeant Richard Cross, number 200843, recorded as being with No 1 Platoon, A Company in Jan 1918.
Sergeant Birkett MM - Likely to be Sergeant Arthur Bolton Birkett, number 8931, who served with 1st King’s Own and arrived in France with them on 23rd August 1914. Recorded as being with 3 Platoon, A Company, 1st/4th King’s Own in Jan 1918. Military Medal for action at Wieltje, 31st July 1917. Came from York.

This object is a very early gas mask worn by number 2030 (later 265388) Private Fred Tickle who served with the 1st/4th Battalion, arriving in France on 3rd May 1915 and discharged on 4th March 1919.  See the sketch of a mask being worn on the First Battalion page.
