PHOTO GALLERY 9th (Service) Bn, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment - Page Four The following photographs are from the collection of Tom Harley who was an officer with C Company of the 9th Battalion.
Flemming, Reverend Gordon and Fielden.
Sergeant (Acting Company Sergeant Major) Walter Kitchen
MM and Lance Corporal Herbert R Wateridge MM. On the 1st October
1916 Sergeant Kitchen led a patrol to Four Tree Hill during the night and
returned at daybreak. No enemy positions encountered, rifle pits
noted on Four Tree Hill. Sergeant Kitchen was awarded the Military
Medal on 19th October 1916. He is further mentioned in the War
Diary, 18th May 1917, 'Work on trenches and wire progressed well and was
not interrupted by enemy shells, except in the left, C Company, wounding
Lieutenant Flemming severely in the back and nine other ranks including
Sergeant Kitchen a hard working and most promising Non-commissioned
officer who had earned the MM. Corporal Wateridge was also awarded
the Military Medal for service with the 9th Battalion in Salonika.
He was presented the ribbon (in lieu of the actual medal) on 16th October
1916. He was later awarded the Medal of St. George 3rd Class, a
Russian award.
Steele, Law, Lith and Strange. The two on the left
are identified as number 20575 Corporal Arthur Steele and 13556 Private
Arthur Law.
