1st/5th Battalion World War One Service Souvenir
CardAt the end of the First World War the service of those
who had served with the 1st/5th Battalion (Territorial Force), King's Own
Royal Lancaster Regiment, was commemorated by a Souvenir Card. Each
card or certificate was named to the soldier concerned and signed by Lieutenant Colonel
Godfrey Hoare, Commanding Officer of the 1st/5th Battalion, which in 1919
was part of the British Army of the Rhine.
Soldiers, former soldiers and the relatives of the deceased were
encouraged to apply for the cards through a public appeal in newspapers
across the North West of England. An initial appeal was made in
January 1919 which was repeated in July 1919. Souvenir Cards were
issued well in to the 1920s.
This, un-issued example, was presented to the Regimental Museum by Captain
Albert Hodgkinson, former Quartermaster of the 1st/5th Battalion and
author of the unit's history.
